Just to be clear, there is a big difference between permethrin-treated clot=
hing, and permethrin in spays for gardens plants, dogs, etc.

I have not been a fan of the latter, or even pyrethrum (the fully natural c=
hemical) and have criticized the latter being allowed under HRM's Pesticide=
By-law and now under provincial legislation because of its broad spectrum =
effects and effects on aquatic life in particular (see http://versicolor.ca=
/lawns/docs/updateAug07.html )

Permethrin applied appropriately to clothing using the appropriate forumula=
tion binds to fabrics and is NOT released even when washed (or is released =
very gradually) but remains toxic to insects landing on the clothing. Thus =
it is much safer than, for example, applying it directly to the body (altho=
ugh that is done for treatment of lice). The only possible adverse environ=
mental effect I could imagine would be disposal of the clothing, but even i=
f it were dropped in a stream, I think there would be very little effect ex=
cept at the surface of the fabric.

There is a growing issue with widespread and increasing use of pyrethroids =
as pesticides

more toxic to humans are phased out but that is in no way related to use o=
f permethrin-treated clothing.

See

for some testing of permethrin-treated clothing

I hope people will consider very carefully before applying such pesticides =
as bug b gon and others to their lawns and gardens. Google them and check t=
heir toxicity to pollinators and other beneficial insects. Surely at least =
those on this nature living list can be leaders, communicators and advocate=
s for dealing with the less than 2% of insects considered pests in other wa=
ys rather than these incredibly poisonous treatments.
As for ticks. Tuck your pant legs in your socks, wear bug jackets and glove=
s etc. Washing pesticide soaked clothing introduces these chemicals into ou=
r water.
Pyrethroids have been found to be unaffected by secondary treatment systems=
at municipal wastewater treatment facilities. They appear in the effluent,=
usually at levels lethal to invertebrates.

With kindest regards

Permethrin is the chemical form of pyrethrin, which comes from
chrysanthemums. Pyrethrin is available in many insecticides sold in
garden stores. It is said to irritate skin, but we sprayed it on the
bottoms of pants and shirt cuffs. We haven?t had any ticks (yet!) on us.
Or skin irritation.

A minor correction, Jane, permethrin is the
man-made analog of pyrethrin and permethrin is
available in far more insecticides than pyrethrin
(because permethrin has a longer shelf-life, a
longer active period and is cheaper to include in
insecticide formulation).
