Racoons have increased in numbers but not much, the main casualty is
vehicle hits now it seems.=C2=A0
=C2=A0
My father used to hunt racoons and had up to 10 black & tans hounds
for it. Used to be another racoon hunter in the Stewiacke Valley too.
Farmers would call from corn damage and away we would go.=C2=A0My
father=C2=A0used to show the dogs and has many trophy's. My point is that
the main control of racoons used to be coon hunters with dogs, not
roaming dogs. Roaming dogs were always shot on sight as not a person
liked them chasing animals, wounding and letting die a slow death. Dogs
will pack up, chase deer and only eat the arse end of deer and leave
them to haul their hind quarters=C2=A0around living for days. (House cats
should not be allowed to roam free either, no other pets=C2=A0are allowed!!=
!)
=C2=A0
My father trapped racoons too as I still do but on a minimum basis.
So between dog hunter and trappers, racoons numbers were kept in
check.=C2=A0not as many trappers now and no racoon dog hunters.
=C2=A0
I would=C2=A0say that=C2=A0coyotes must be killing racoons in large numbe=
rs
now too=C2=A0though.
=C2=A0
The large increase in painted turtles in this area (each lake has
over a dozen)=C2=A0seems largly related=C2=A0to=C2=A0the lack of wood turtl=
es. We
never even used to see a single painted turtle, now they are everywhere.
=C2=A0
An interesting puzzle,
=C2=A0
Darrell

I really do question SSC. There are painted turtles everywhere around
my area, littlerly hundreds within a few kms,=C2=A0never seen so many in
all my life. Now wood turtles used to be the most common but are rarely
seen now, no mention of them on the SSC list.
=C2=A0
I would say it would be best to educate on leaving well enough alone
and to say to child... how would you like it if somebody came and took
you out of our home and put you into a box elsewhere.
=C2=A0
The golden rule truely is golden in teaching all people, not just
children. Mind you, I would not want to have my legs thrown into a
frying pan either. Life is a balancing act. You heard of the farmers
asking for more culling of deer, of course some who=C2=A0don't want the
killing of anything come out of the woodwork, no balance.
=C2=A0
All the best,
Darrell
