Hi everyone,

As you are likely aware, swallows, along with other aerial insectivores,
are declining rapidly across North America, and these declines are
particularly steep in the Maritimes. I am undertaking a doctoral degree at
Dalhousie University with Marty Leonard to understand why these species are
in decline and I need your help.

Over the next couple years, I will be monitoring the breeding success of
Bank, Barn, Cliff and Tree Swallows in the border region of NS and NB. I
am also banding adult swallows to determine annual return rates, and
collecting a few flank feathers and a small drop of blood (max. 0.05 mL)
that will allow me to determine overwintering locations and stress hormone
levels during the non-breeding period. This summer was the first field
season of a three-year project and I would like to include a few additional
sites over the next two years.

I am looking for sites with in an hours drive of Amherst NS or Sackville NB
where there are active nests for Barn and Cliff Swallows. Please let me
know if you are aware of any sites in this area. I would also be happy to
answer any questions about my project.

Thanks for your time,

Tara
