I drove out to Waterside and Caribou Island this morning. There were plenty
of birds to be seen as the water is opening up more and bare patches of
ground were plentiful and a welcome sight. I saw my first Tree Swallow of
the year at Caribou Island. The Northumberland Strait still had lots of ice
that is pushed in against the shoreline. Open water was seen quite a
distance out. Things should open up nicely with the right wind. Looking at
Environment Canada's Daily Ice Chart there isn't much more to come down
through. There were a few Red-winged Blackbirds in a marshy area not far
past the causeway, however, this area was still iced over. I am seeing
signs of thinning ice and small areas of open water in a few ponds/marshes;
Waterside Beach Provincial Park, in particular (left side of the causeway
heading to Caribou Island). It's not much but it's a start.

I also went to Granton to check on the Osprey nest and there was one Osprey
in the nest this morning. There is not much open water nearby in this
particular area at the moment. Hoping things melt quickly. As I was walking
out to the Middle River Dyke I saw my first Eastern Phoebe and Savannah
Sparrows of the year. My first Ring-necked Duck of the year was also seen
in this area. There were a couple of Horned Larks that landed briefly then
flew off away from me. I didn't see them again.

I checked on the eagle's nest by Seaview Cemetery (just outside Pictou) and
there was one eagle sitting in the nest. Good news is that Pictou Harbour
is opening up nicely with lots of open water and plenty of ducks and
cormorants taking advantage.

I still have plenty of Common Redpolls at my place (Pictou) first thing
each morning with at least 100 here this morning. I am waiting for the day
that they don't show up anymore. Things will be quiet then as I've had them
daily since Jan 10th with numbers peaking around 175-200 some days.

Peggy
