Hi Paul & All,
The old bridge over the Gaspereau River on Route 12 (on the short =
loop that is slightly east of the current bridge) has stone work that =
has stood the test of ice and water over many years; I suspect since =
that road was first used. As you say, a lot of knowhow goes into that =
quality of workmanship. Just briefly, I would like to be there to see =
how it is done.

Subject: [NatureNS] Site of former mill
Hi All=20
Yesterday before the rain a friend and I went for a drive.=20
As we approached the Shannon River we saw a trail going into the =
woods.=20
It would have been a road in days gone by. We walked the trail and =
came upon=20
the site of a former saw mill. All remains of the mill and the =
buildings were gone=20
but the dam was still there - at least the stone part.=20
The dam was an impressive structure, about 2 meters in height with a =
rock face=20
and backfilled with local fill. Building that required a lot of hard =
work with a team=20
of oxen and a stone boat. Also a lot of knowhow too.=20
The wooden part was gone but the remains still back up the water =
perhaps 0.5 meters.=20
It must have flooded a large part of the lowland behind it and made =
some changes to=20
the local environment.=20
At the site of the buildings there was an array of plants not native =
to the area. Most striking=20
was a yellow Day Lilly - a very lovely clear yellow. Smaller than =
todays models but no less=20
beautiful and had survived all those years without any care. A good =
plant. The are will be explored=20
re plants in more detail latter.=20
Ladys Slippers were quite common in the area scattered through the =
woods that had grown to=20
a good size. Yesterday with the dark overcast gave them a glow not =
often seen.=20
A fine spot!=20
Enjoy the summer=20
