Good idea, Paul.

A couple of years ago, we learned of a local charity which released balloon=
s to raise money to deal with local cancer issues. I contacted the Preside=
nt, and she mentioned having searched the literature. One particular societ=
y in the U.S. evidently found that latex balloons were less harmful than s=
ynthetic ones, but I did get the distinct feeling that the author had to po=
rtray them in the best light. Same old story about the absence of evidence=
is not evidence of absence, of harm in this case.

(Ol=E2=80=99 Don Rumsfeld had his problems, but his logic here is spot on!)=

Great to see the whales Peter.

On balloons, one time I Keji I found one with the name of a bank in NE

on it. I wrote to the bank expressing my displeasure at that and got

a very nice letter from a vice-pres apologizing for the incident and saying=

that he hadn't known they would cause a problem. He then assured me that it=

wouldn't happen in the future.

So if anyone picks up a balloon with a name, write them, politely or otherw=
ise.

expressing your displeasure. Maybe the media could get on this also.

Enjoy the summer

On Tuesday this week I delivered a 31ft Motor Yacht from Penobscot Bay Main=
e to Shelburne, 14 hours at an average speed of about 15kts. No outstanding=
nature events other than the usual birds, a few seals and also a couple of=
Ocean Sunfish until we were about 40 miles west of Yarmouth when we were a=
pproaching a large pod of whales. Given the location, I was expecting North=
ern Right Whales. We stopped and they were all around us but they were much=
bigger than right whales and had a small dorsal fin near the tail. There =
were probably 10 whales in the pod and they stayed in the area on the surfa=
ce and broaching for a while until they moved away. From the size and appea=
rance I believe they were Fin Whales and I suspect were after herring in th=
e area. Certainly a highlight of the trip. A bad part of the trip were the =
dozens of party balloons both near the coast, and offshore, many on the Can=
adian side. Most were single but there were also bundles of up to 10 of al=
l colours. Certainly added garbage for the ocean but also a big hazard to T=
urtles that ingest them thinking they are jellyfish.
