Hi Fred & All,
In these cases of NM stands, did NM replace native forest stands or
'invade' vacant lots or other underutilized space ? I don't have statistics
but, based on observation of trees cut, Norway Maple can produce wood at a
rate of 2-4 times that of either Red or Sugar Maple. Hybrid Poplar may be
better I don't know.
In a future which should exploit photosynthesis for energy to the
maximum extent, and avoid waterway pollution by closing the nutrient cycle,
I think firewood crop plantations amenable to mechanical harvesting and
fertilized by light applications of 'biosolids' should be part of the
picture.
