I had a report of a dead gannet at Upper LaHave. This is way up the LaHave=
River=2C so likely blown in during some of the heavy winds that we've had =
recently. =20

Last week I witnessed at least 32 gannets and 10 diving just outside the Ma=
cCormack Beach in Eastern Passage. Thought one was a Caspian tern=2C but w=
as distracted for a moment so I couldn't relocate it to confirm my sighting=
. =20
You would see such a feeding frenzy especially when the conditions are idea=
l -- that's what I have observed them up close: pending storm=2C strong wi=
nds=2C and incoming tide. A few years ago=2C we saw 100s of gannets and pe=
trels up close off Big Island a few years ago. That was when the tide was c=
oming in and the winds were strong.=20

Since at least August 9th there have been a number of Northern Gannets very=
close to shore in the Pubnico Area. I was watching them go into Pubnico Ha=
rbour=2C then make a turn and head back out towards sea. They were also pas=
sing near shore from Pubnico Point all the way north until Abbotts Harbour =
Wharf. Ervin Olsen saw one land in the water off of Cook's Beach near Pinkn=
ey's Point recently. Frank Gummett also mentioned to me that he had four in=
Halifax Harbour on August 11.=20

A CBC article from July discusses multiple gannets found dead in the Mariti=
mes.
I can assume that the near shore sightings of gannets must be food related.=
Is there more food near shore than usual=2C or is there less food offshore=
? I was scoping around where I was seeing the gannets and didn't see any ot=
her species that are typically farther offshore.

Has anyone else noticed this?=20
