Hi Jim & All,
Delighted to Jim. Thanks for the soapbox.=20
The unsound element is "Biomass energy derived from primary harvesting =
increases carbon emissions for many decades..."
While primary clear cut harvesting for biomass is just plain dumb =
any of the associated carbon emissions (combustion of biomass, decrease =
in soil organic matter, decay of roots...) are simply a return of the =
CO2 which was previously borrowed from the atmosphere in recent decades. =
In addition there is an averaging out effect to consider. If all trees =
world-wide were cut and burned at the same instant there would no doubt =
be a spike in CO2 emissions greater than the spikes which go along with =
fall & winter. These time out periods of photosynthesis; night, winter, =
temporary drought, harvest are of not account provided significant =
protosynthetic potential is retained overall. The real problem in this =
context is the expansion of deserts with essentially no plant cover; =
another matter entirely.=20
But, and this is a key distinction, primary harvesting for biomass =
or other uses, if done with common sense as a guide, may be expected to =
increase the average rate of rate of CO2 capture. Examples include, =
modest thinning so the remaining trees are less suppressed and removal =
of larger trees that from an efficient carbon capture viewpoint are just =
taking up space.=20
And in addition one must always consider the net effect of =
alternative fuel sources; fossil fuels. Using any of these injects into =
circulation carbon which has been sequestered for millions of years. And =
mark my words; the powerful coal, oil and gas lobbies must weep with joy =
when they hear naturalists opposed to biomass, wind power...
And yes, some sites where the soil was damaged by machinery may take =
a decade to develop an efficient photosynthetic cover but that is a =
problem brought on by damage to soil and not harvesting per se.=20
To cite one example with rapid recovery, fixation improvement and =
minimal soil damage-- on 5+ acres that I had clear cut in 2000 when all =
the Spruce started to shed needles in early summer the instructions to =
the chainsaw operator were to avoid damage to any hardwoods and I asked =
to the porter operator to not haul when the ground was wet. Within three =
and in some areas two years there was lush waist-high vegetative cover; =
insect heaven-- and 15 growing seasons later there is in much of the =
area 40' Ash trees. And BTW; dead Spruce don't fix carbon.

Thanks for this, Dave. Below is point no. 3 that you criticized (from =
Helga Guderley=92s petition) =97 could you elaborate a bit on why that =
point is not sound? Thanks and Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
3. The Nova Scotia Power biomass boiler relies overwhelmingly on =
primary harvesting =96 trees clear-cut and chipped solely for power =
generation. Its =93must run=94 status is due to the need for steam at =
the Port Hawkesbury Paper mill, not because it is sustainable. Biomass =
energy derived from primary harvesting increases carbon emissions for =
many decades, unthinkable at a time when humans need to reduce their =
carbon footprint.

Thanks Heather & Bob. Point #3 is not sound but 5 out of 6 was a =
good grade when I went to school so I signed it and forwarded the =
petition to Facebook.

Fellow naturalists, if you love our forests and hate the =
practise of biomass for power, please look at this petition and sign it. =
