If the bird nested on the ground in open land, such as a pasture, I would suspect a Savannah Sparrow.  I think most of the other common sparrows, e.g. Song and White-throated,  and Junco, would prefer nesting on the ground under the cover of shrubs, or low in the shrubs themselves.

</div> I came across a nest with four tiny eggs, (in a hoofprint made last summer by my horse when he was in that pasture!). I very carefully checked it a few days later to find miniscule naked chicks. They are so vulnerable, it's amazing that they aren't all taken by predators.

Chris, I believe all of our native sparrows are ground nesters, with some, like the White-throated, also nesting in low shrubs.
