Hi Carmel and all,

One of the goals in my acoustic monitoring is to document the importance =
of a diversity of stop-over areas in Nova Scotia. The inland areas of =
Nova Scotia are probably under-birded, but my recordings reveal high =
counts and a rich diversity of species in inland regions. The comparison =
I=E2=80=99m doing this year between acoustic counts in Carleton and =
radar data in Caribou, Maine seem to provide evidence that birds are =
flying in a broad front that extends from Northern New Brunswick/Maine =
to Southern Nova Scotia. But as you well stated, there are likely =
micro-corridors within the matrix of this broad front. Unfortunately, I =
have no information on Blue-headed Vireos since vireos appear not to =
have flight calls when migrating. I do have an acoustic monitoring =
station in Lunenburg County. The data there might be interesting to =
compare with your stop-over patch. I have not analyzed the data for this =
fall yet but the information for last year is available at: =
<http://www.johnfkearney.com/South_Canoe_Autumn_2015.html> =

Hi John,=20

Interesting to see the patterns of the two years compared, I see the =
spike you are talking about compared to last year. I discovered an area =
on my property that is a popular migrant stopover, so I'm curious to see =
what it looks like this year. Last year it was busiest between September =
17 and 27, with the most migrant warblers in numbers and species, which =
corresponds with your peak of nocturnal migration last year, =
interestingly enough. I am inland from Bridgewater, in Lunenburg County, =
it's not like on the coast for example, but I am still surprised at the =
variety I get passing through here. Being on a hill and near a river =
helps I believe.=20

=20

I'll be interested to see if you get another peak and if I also get an =
influx of migrants in the next week to ten days. Migration is one of =
those amazing phenomena that I find endlessly fascinating, and it's =
intriguing to be able to observe facets of it right here at my home =
base. I think it would be amazing if more citizens took an interest and =
monitored their own home area, especially if there is a spot where =
migrants like to congregate or have a stop-over. A "lay-over" if you =
will! This could also figure into plans to protect habitats. I know =
there are some major corridors, but it seems there are some =
micro-corridors as well, and I think it would be good to find out more =
about them.

One species I am wondering about is the Blue-headed Vireo, and curious =
about their overall numbers compared to last year. I've seen a lot less =
of them here this season.

thanks and keep up the good work!

Carmel
