Nice photos. The animal appears to be a native mink and not an escaped =
one, using my =E2=80=98non-expert=E2=80=99 eyes. I would suppose that =
Seaforth is a long distance from the nearest mink factory.(?) The =
=E2=80=98farmed=E2=80=99 ones are often black or very dark brown, =
specially bred to be larger and darker to fetch the highest fur price. =
I once visited a mink farm in the valley; a disheartening experience, =
seeing hundreds of black mink peering curiously out at me from inside =
mesh wire, shoebox-sized cages. The smell (stench actually) was =
unbelievable. Not much of a life for the minks. (I=E2=80=99ll stick =
with my MEC jacket.)=20

I watched a wild mink for some moments late last fall on the Mersey =
River. It came ashore and rubbed its neck-frontal area repeatedly on a =
flat slate rock, then loped around me, exploring here and there only 6-8 =
m away, ignoring me. Then along the river bank-forest edge and out of =
site. Delightful. I wondered if another mink had placed its musk on =
that flat rock, or it had smelled some other odor there. (No beavers =
around the area for castoreum deposits.) Otherwise, why the apparent =
fondness for the rock?

There was way to much fog along the coast from Lawrencetown eastwards =
for any meaningful bird watching or photography this morning. However, =
I came across a very friendly Mink as I walked back across the tidal =
flats after scanning the Canada Geese for the Pink-footed goose at =
Fisherman=E2=80=99s Reserve/Causeway Road in Seaforth. The mink just =
popped up from the rocks alongside the Causeway Road. He seemed to be =
very curious about me and my camera, letting me take numerous photos of =
him before he got bored and scooted across the road. These photos were =
taken from about 3 meters away. Posted a few pictures of him in my =
gallery at:
