For canoeing enthusiasts the Shubie Canal has a lot to offer. A number of international events have taken place on the Shubenacadie Canal. Lake Banook has modern racing facilities and is located near downtown Dartmouth. There are also a number of locations along the canal to rent canoes and kayaks.

Walking along the many trails beside the Canal is a popular activity. There are also a number of campgrounds both provincial and privately owned near the Canal. With plans for the Trans Canada Trail to run along parts of the Canal, new walking trails will be opening up all the time.
