Windows 3.1, 3.11 Program Files

There is one major difference between Windows 3.1 and 3.11. The communications driver file, comm.drv, which comes with Windows 3.1 will not allow fast modem speed or simultaneous receiving and transmitting of data. There are several replacement files for comm.drv, but a common freeware one is cybercom.drv available for download as a self-installing file here. A text file explaining the details of the file is available here. Windows 3.11 users do not need this file.

The Tera Term telnet program given out with the Chebucto Plus setup disks can be used as a free-standing dialup program as well as a telnet program. It is a freeware program that is also available for download from the Tera Term home page at: http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html.

The first step is to replace the teraterm.ini file in your Tera Term directory (this would be c:\chebucto\tterm if you used the Chebucto Plus CD or disks, c:\teraterm if you downloaded it and installed with default settings) with this version of teraterm.ini. You will also want this dialer file to connect to CCN: chebucto.ttl, which you download and put into the same directory as the Tera Term program.

Please note that these files are set to your modem being on COM PORT 2. You will have to change these settings if your modem is on a different COM PORT. You may also have to alter these files if your modem does not support a Baud Rate of 38,400 or if you need to dial any extra numbers to get an outside line, etc.

In addition to connecting to CCN, Tera Term can also be used to connect to the Halifax Regional Library and access any services available from their online service. These services can be accessed via telnet, or by dialup using this file: library.ttl, which you download and put into the same directory as the Tera Term program.

To use Tera Term as a telnet program, select TCP/IP after you have started the program. You will need to be connected to Chebucto Plus or another ISP with a PPP connection for this to work. Your default TCP/IP connection will be to chebucto.ns.ca. Hit OK and login as you would with a regular dialup connection. To access the Halifax Regional Library via telnet, select the library.nsh.library.ns.ca connection in the TCP/IP window and hit OK.

To use Tera Term as a freestanding dialup program, select Serial after starting the program. Select your modem's COM PORT (the default will be 2) and hit OK. Select Control in the Menu bar then Macro. Select your dialup macro. Chebucto.ttl will connect you to the Chebucto Community Net and library.ttl will connect you to the Halifax Regional Library.

Windows 95, 98, ME, XP Program Files

The Tera Term Pro telnet program given out with the Chebucto Plus setup CD can be used as a free-standing dialup program as well as a telnet program. It is a freeware program that is also available for download from the Tera Term home page at: http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html.

The first step after downloading and installing Tera Term is to replace the teraterm.ini file in your Tera Term directory (this would be c:\chebucto\tterm if you used the Chebucto Plus CD, c:\Program Files\ttermpro if you downloaded it and installed with default settings) with this version of teraterm.ini. You will also want this dialer file to connect to Chebucto: chebucto.ttl, which you download and put into the same directory as the Tera Term Pro program.

Please note that these files are set to your modem being on COM PORT 2. You will have to change these settings if your modem is on a different COM PORT. You may also have to alter these files if your modem does not support a Baud Rate of 38,400 or if you need to dial any extra numbers to get an outside line, etc. You can edit the teraterm.ini file with any text editing program. Be sure to save the file without changing the name from teraterm.ini

We also recommend this SSH add-on for Tera Term Pro, downloadable here. SSH is an encrypted, more secure form of telnet. The Chebucto Community Net supports encrypted SSH logins.

In addition to connecting to CCN, Tera Term Pro can also be used to connect to the Halifax Regional Library and access any services available from their online service. These services can be accessed via telnet, or by dialup using this file: library.ttl, which you download and put into the same directory as the Tera Term Pro program.

To use Tera Term Pro as a telnet program, select TCP/IP after you have started the program. You will need to be connected to Chebucto Plus or another ISP with a PPP connection for this to work. Your default TCP/IP connection will be to www.chebucto.ns.ca. Hit OK and login as you would with a regular dialup connection. To access the Halifax Regional Library via telnet, select the library.nsh.library.ns.ca connection in the TCP/IP window and hit OK.

To use Tera Term Pro as a freestanding dialup program, select Serial after starting the program. Select your modem's COM PORT (the default will be 2) and hit OK. Select Control in the Menu bar then Macro. Select your dialup macro. Use chebucto.ttl to connect you to the Chebucto Community Net and library.ttl to connect to the Halifax Regional Library.
