Vancouver Socks

Vancouver Socks Whilst visiting the West Coast Knitters Guild in Vancouver, I was very taken by the array of wild fantasy yarns available in the local yarn shops. I love long socks and wanted to incorporate these strange yarns. Many of these synthetic wonders, however, were distinctly non washable, which led me to the removable machine washable 'footlet' which can be attached at the ankle by buttons to the upper leg. The 'footlet' is black Socka with a strand of kid mohair.

The calf shaping was sparked off by the equisitely beautiful Bavarian knitting style, whose socks have 'Wadl' to accomodate real legs with muscles! The tops of the socks are reversed garter stitch - switching from knit to purl ( or vice versa ) at the turn line to keep the striped pattern on the right side. Use of garter stitch, coincidentally, maximises the textural effects of the yarns and gives a pleasantly elastic fabric to better cling to the leg. Under the sock-top there are lime green I-cord garters worked in an 'elastic yarn' - the best use I have found for this yet!

I would love to produce a series of different legs and different coloured footlets and then you could mix and match to suit your mood.
