Sustainable Maritimes (sust-mar) Tip: your message didn't get posted? You probably sent it with html coding. Use your "Format" pull-down menu to switch to plain text format. ____________________________________________________________________________ This is an important message for everyone who contributes to sust-mar. Sustainable Maritimes (sust-mar) has been a success for almost 10 years! But, it needs your cooperation to keep going. Maintaining sust-mar (alone) takes time. My time is not unlimited. My internet access is not constant. Your time is limited too. Over the years, you have shown me that if there are two many postings, or too much that you don't like, you will vote with your fingers. You will unsubscribe. Guidelines have evolved based on your feedback. As a result, we have an all-time high of subscribers (almost 400, including over 70 who receive a weekly digest). This forces me to be increasingly SELECTIVE about what gets on sust-mar ... and what gets deleted. I used to spend a lot of my time reminding people. Over and over. I don't have time anymore. I simply delete messages that aren't formatted right. That's why THIS message is important. If you ever need a reminder, send 'info sust-mar' to majordomo@chebucto.ca (without the quotes). FORMAT: More and more of you use fancier and fancier emailers. You use pretty fonts and colours. Not on sust-mar please. Your message must please be in PLAIN TEXT FORMAT. How do you know? Look right now at the "Format" pull-down menu in your emailer. Change it to 'Plain Text.' Change it permanently and you will save bandwidth and reduce our need for bigger and faster computers. Your messages will reach sust-mar. And, your friends with Chebucto Community Net accounts will be able to read your emails. VOLUME: Almost 400 of you means one post per year per person. But, many of you send much more than that. That's good! But, to be fair to everyone else, i will post your second and subsequent messages in any month in a lower priority queue. I will give less frequent posters a chance to say something first before you get a second go (in any given calendar month). TIMELINESS: Not everyone reads email everyday. You might be one of 6 or more people to submit a message to sust-mar today. Please send your message in EARLY. Weeks early. I am sure you didn't just plan that big event 3 days ahead of time. I am sure that job posting wasn't dreampt up 48 hours before closing. Please don't wait til then to tell sust-mar. CC: If you want to copy your message to the world, go for it! But, please use "bcc:" or send sust-mar a separate message. Takes seconds of your time. Protects the privacy of your cc recipients. Remember that sust-mar posts are archived, c/w all your recipients email addresses. SIZE MATTERS: 10K or less please. Be kind to the digest recipients who have to scroll through your whole message to get to the next one. COPYRIGHT MATERIAL: not on sust-mar, please. TOPIC: News and events still get priority over discussion. I post discussion when there is space. That's all.
