Bonny Lee's Home Page

Welcome to my home page. This page doesn't get updated very often ... after you read through it, you'll have some idea why!

This is the verbose version of my page. For the short version, see my index.

What Keeps Me Busy These Days...

My Job

I work, almost full-time, in the Oceanography Department of Dalhousie University, as a research assistant. My duties range from Unix system administration to programming to general office tasks.

My Family

My husband is Bruce Brown, and he works at Applied Microelectronics. We have a beautiful daughter, Ariana Lee-Brown, born on 4 Feb 1992 (Chinese New Year's Day, Year of Monkey).

Based on our experiences, we have formulated Bruce and Bonny's Theory of Children and Relativity.

Here are a couple of family pictures:

At the age of 3, Ariana was diagnosed with PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder). This is an autism-related disorder. For more about autism, a good place to start is John Wobus's Autism Resources, which includes an excellent FAQ on autism.

One of the symptoms of Ariana's PDD is delayed language development. Our speech-language pathologist gave us some techniques from the Hanen Early Language Program which have been really helpful.

Luckily my immediate family (parents and sibs) have been very supportive. I feel very fortunate to have such a close family!

Volunteer work for Chebucto Community Net

Chebucto Community Net (formerly called Chebucto FreeNet) is a community-based computer network for Halifax, Dartmouth and surrounding areas. I used to do a lot of volunteer work for CCN, mostly in the area of Support and Training. I've had to cut down a lot since I started working.

Most of my CCN time, I spend doing list-owner stuff for my mailing list, called modem-moms. Despite the name, it's for all parents, not just moms. You can find out more at the modem-moms home page.

Dancing

Dancing used to be my main hobby. I had been taking dance classes, mostly ballet, at Halifax Dance for quite a few years. I was taking dance twice a week up until I started my current job (in December 95). Since then, I've been to class off and on - mostly off! - and haven't been taking class for about a year now. Besides ballet, I have sampled modern, jazz, tap, belly dance, ballroom dance, African dance.

I have collected a small list of a few dance resources on the Internet, but they're growing so fast, I can't keep track of them all!

I've also done volunteer work for Dance Nova Scotia (DANS) to help them get their first Web page up.

Stuff I Wish I Had More Time For...

Web Page Development

I used to maintain a couple of small web sites but I don't do that anymore because it takes up too much time. I don't even have time to maintain my home page! Hopefully sometime in the future I'll be able to pick it up again -- maybe after my daughter goes to college!

There's all kinds of nifty HTML things you can do nowadays, which I haven't had time to try out yet. I used to subscribe to a wonderful mailing list called Spiderwoman, which is a list devoted to supporting women web designers.

A family recipe book

I'm collecting some of my mom's recipes, but it's going very slowly.

All that crafty stuff

I like sewing, weaving (haven't done that for a while though), knitting, crochet, wearable art, all that textile-related stuff. I squeeze in a little sewing now and again but mostly I just dream about the stuff I'll make when I have more time...
