Yes Jamie cougars are great for stories.Go to a pub in New Glasgow on Satur=
day evening, you couldfill a book. Lots of fun!One of my best stories was o=
nce a fellow told me there was a cougarwith 5 kittens near where he lived. =
I had to go see. When we got there we needed to walk back in the woods a bit=
and on the way we passed a pasture field with perhaps 20 ewes and their lam=
bs.Lovely Suffolk sheep my favorite breed. but if you were to measure their=
IQ for=C2=A0the avoiding danger in the form of big teeth, Suffolk would ra=
te near the bottomof the pile with Cluns near the top. Anyway I said to the=
fellow if he knew the farmer who owned the sheep. He assured me he did - an=
d I asked if the farmer had any problems lately? No he said the farmer a few=
days ago had said what a good summer they were having. Now if there was a f=
emale cougar with 5 kittens within walking distance, thosesheep would not b=
e having a good summer. In fact their numbers would be decreasing rapidly.A=
nd CWS agreed with me when they phoned and asked my opinion of the story!En=
joy the storiesPaul

Thanks for chasing it down.=C2=A0 A healthy skepticism (aka a well tuned BS=
Detector) is certainly required dealing with all things interweb.=C2=A0
And yet... I know a few very credible witnesses, woods-wise and not given t=
o hyperbole, who have convinced me of their eyewitness accounts.=C2=A0 Cert=
ainly there are enough deer to go around.=C2=A0 And another top shelf carni=
vore (the Eastern Coyote) has certainly been successful moving into the are=

Many moons ago now.=C2=A0 Well maybe not that long, just about 29 or 30 yea=
rs ago, there were many sightings and reports of the Eastern Cougar in East=
LaHave.=C2=A0 This was just after they clearcut straight across from Daysp=
ring to the LaHave River and razed the common land of the huge trees that e=
xisted there.=C2=A0 Also, the common land behind the mines road and around =
to what the locals called the Beaver Dam.=C2=A0=C2=A0So cougars were being =
seen close to habitation after this happened for a few years.=C2=A0 I've no=
t heard of any recent reports.=C2=A0 Around that time my brother had been o=
ut deer hunting and saw two cats rolling in the middle of the road with lon=
g tails.=C2=A0 The were cougar cubs and as he approached one ran to either =
side of the road and up trees.=C2=A0 My brother then heard a growl and look=
ed up to see the mother in a tree above his head.=C2=A0 He made a quick ret=
reat.=C2=A0 After that we found tracks in the yard outside of our recidence=
in East LaHave.=C2=A0 Three inches across and the obvious cat tracks.=C2=
=A0 There were also tracks in Indian Path in the gravel pit there and heade=
d up towards the common land between there and Riverport.=C2=A0 Which is no=
w a public trail system.=C2=A0 I contacted DNR at the time and by the time =
a response happened all signs of the cougar had been removed due to heavy r=
ain.=C2=A0 I had tried to unsuccessfully make a plaster cast of one of the =
tracks prior to that.=C2=A0 I believe I did take a photo at the time though=
, but=C2=A0don't know where exactly to put my hands on it now.=C2=A0 Many p=
eople in the area of East LaHave saw these cougars at the time, but I'm not=
sure if any ever reported it to those that needed to know.=C2=A0 I also kn=
ow that sightings occurred across the River in the area of LaHave, Pleasant=
ville.=C2=A0 A sighting was made by a person who at that time worked for DN=
R.=C2=A0 I believe that sighting was washed under the table as no proof=C2=
=A0happened.=C2=A0 Anyhow, I'm confident due to the number of sightings and=
that of my brother that they did exist here.=C2=A0 My brother knows his st=
uff.=C2=A0 So as they say no proof,=C2=A0no existence.=C2=A0=C2=A0

I know there is a lot of disbelief about cougars in NS, but My wife and I s=
aw one while driving up to Cape Breton in the late 1960's. I was quite fami=
liar with these critters from several sightings on Vancouver Island while c=
onducting salmon research.Paul.

I no nothing of the provenance of this yet so no warranty to it's validity =
etc.=C2=A0 Purportedly near Weymouth NS, certainly the background and time =
of day could be SW Nova.
Still messing with Google+ but this is is shared publicly so hopefully no a=
cct/login necessary.=C2=A0 Let me know how it works.=C2=A0 If I can track d=
own anything further I'll post.
