Games/Series to watch
-----------------------------------
#5 Lethbridge vs. #8 Alberta

1. McMaster (21-3) - end the regular season at home vs Brock (15-14). Mac
has already clinched the OUA West, and a first round bye. In their two
previous meetings, Mac has won by 15 and 11. Coach Raso has never
finished better than 12-2 in the regular season. They are now 12-1 --
their one loss a 1 point defeat to Western.

2. Laurentian (19-4) - visit York (14-14) on Friday, and Queen's (8-19) on
Sunday to end the regular season. Already clinched the OUA East. They
beat both teams by double digits ealier in the season. Laurentian will
finish 1st, York 2nd. After that, it's a dogfight primarily between
Toronto, Ryerson and Ottawa -- two teams will make it.

3. Victoria (22-6) - host UBC (11-13) in the Canada West semi-finals
starting Friday. They clinched first place in Canada West last week,
despite losing two in Lethbridge. They are a perfect 5-0 vs. UBC this
year, though two of the wins were by 4 and 6 points. Canada West had
parity in a strange way this year:

        Victoria 16-4
        Lethbridge 15-5
        Alberta 15-5
        UBC 9-11
        Calgary 4-16
        Sasktchwn 1-19

4. Bishop's (24-4) - end the regular season at McGill (4-23) on Friday.
Clinched the Quebec conference a few weeks back. Already beat McGill
twice, by 28 and 35 points. Average margin of victory in the regular
season was 18. Bishop's has not lost to a team with a sub .500 record
yet.

5. Lethbridge (21-10) - host #8 Alberta (19-7) in the Canada West
semi-finals on Friday. The winner of this series will go on with title
hopes and wild card possibilities. The other team is probably done for
the year. They are 3-1 vs. Alberta this year. Secured home court
advantage with 2 clutch victories vs. Victoria last weekend.

6. Acadia (17-7) - Beat #9 SFX by 8 on Monday. Host UCCB (13-12) on
Friday, visit UNB (16-10) on Sunday. They are 2-0 vs these teams, with
both wins in double digits. Have a command 4 loss lead with 4 games left
in the regular season. One win in the last 4 will clinch first place in
the Atlantic conference.

7. Western (19-4) - Beat 5-12 Windsor last night by 3. That brings their
record in games decided by three or less points to 6-1. On the other end,
Windsor is 0-5 in games decided by 3 or less points. Western end the
regular season when they host Waterloo (15-10) on Saturday. They've
clinched second place and a first round bye, though it has importance to
Waterloo who are still jockeying for playoff positions. Western won in
Waterloo 10 days ago.

8. Alberta (19-7) - visit #5 Lethbridge (21-10) starting Friday for the
Canada West semi-finals. See Lethbridge comment. Since November 22nd,
Alberta has lost one game -- to Lethbridge. They are 15-1 in that
stretch. What a series this should be.

9. SFX (19-8) - Lost to #6 Acadia on Monday. Visit Saint Mary's (16-11)
on Saturday. Stumbling, bumbling through the regular season after a fine
pre-season. Before the new year, SFX was 10-2. After, they are 9-6.
Will the real SFX stand up? Feb 14th, they lost to 9-13 Dalhousie by 12.
The next day, they beat 16-11 Saint Mary's by 43. Trying to solidy a
possible wild card application. Here's the Atlantic logjam. Shame all
teams make the playoffs, or there'd be some wild games coming up.

        Acadia 13-3
        St. Mary's 11-7
        SFX 10-7
        UCCB 10-7
        UNB 10-8

10. Brandon (13-7) - end the season when they host Manitoba (9-19) on
Saturday. They are 4-0 vs. Manitoba this year. Clinched the regular
season title last night vs. Regina. They have a one game lead over Regina
with one game left -- and they hold the tiebreaker.

Cheers,
Mark

CHEERS RPI

[FINAL] For games through Sun 1997

RPI is a rating that is derived from the team's winning percentage, their opponents' winning percentage and their opponents' opponents' winning percentage. The idea is that if you win against a great team, you benefit more than if you toast an 0-10 team. It's used quite heavily in the NCAA. I don't subtract the original team's records from the remainder, which is why the NCAA's numbers are much higher. Leaving it in, simply moves the numbers closer to .500

Sched is the schedule strength, or the winning percentage of the opposing teams.
