Programming
In celebration of its 20th anniversary the Centre for Art Tapes kicks off
the year with a dynamic new exhibition.entitled Crossroads It reflects the
times and the diverse concerns of artists at this historical moment. The
exhibition features the work of The Skin Collective, Marcia Connolly, David
Clark, Alex Grunenfelder, Tonia Di Risio and Gabriel Doucet Donida.. Each
installation has an electronic component, video, audio, web-site or
computer projection, and is uniquely situated in the Khyber Arts Centre
building at 1588 Barrington Street, Halifax. The exhibition opens January
11,with a reception at 7 pm. It continues until January 30th. Gallery
hours are Wednesday through Saturday 12-6 pm. Admission is free.

Recently at the Centre

The Centre for Art Tapes and Wormwoods Cinema present a program of Asian television commercials never before seen in North America. The commercials provide a window into contrasting popular cultures of Asia Pasific with a unique fusion
of art and commerce blending social and political issues. The 90 minute program includes commercials from:
Australia/New Zealand, The Republic of Korea, India, the ASEAN countries, Japan and China. (English sub-titles).
This screening coincides with Canada's hosting of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference in
Vancouver, November 1997. Screening is at Wormwoods Cinema 2112 Gottingen St., Halifax.

Art and Interactive Digital Art Exhibition
opened at Eye Level
Gallery at 7 pm September 2, 1997. This show features six web art sites
and
six CD ROM productions created by artists with unique perspectives on the
visual language and meaning employed in 'interactivity'.
June 21, 1997
Performance Bytes
was a two phase performance event using the latest video conferencing
technology and the latest web broadcast software. At the core of the
event was a webcast of performances by Tanya Mars and Andreas Guibert/Jim
MacSwain.
April 24,1997 New Video Works This event
showcased 8 recent works: six by renowned and emerging local artists
including recent recipients of the N.S. Film Development Corporation 5
Minute Production Grants. Sean Kelly, Michael Weir, Marie Kohler, Rosemary
MacAulay, Daun Windover, Zachery Longboy, Janet Hawkwood, James MacSwain.
February 27, 1997 InSight: Media Art from the
Middle of Europe.
Presented by the Centre For Art Tapes and curated by Nina Czegledy.
InSight illustrated contemporary concerns in the media arts, particularly
in Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Slovenia.

Artist-In-Residence
Twice a year an established Canadian artist is invited to spend 3 to 4
weeks at the Centre making her/his work, giving presentations, teaching
workshops, and meeting with the local community.The Centre provides
three editing suites: a digital nonlinear Avid, a Betacam SP, and a 3/4'.
It also provides a 16-track digital sound studio, a computer
graphic/animation station and mobile audio/video equipment. Facilities and
equipment are available for rent to members and non-members. Fees are set
on a sliding scale and distinguish between individual, non-profit and
commercial projects. Everyone who uses the Centre's equipment must receive
clearance from the Director of Production. Staff and members can provide
assistance in planning and organizing audio, video and computer
productions.
